Who we are
Heartbeat Detroit was founded by Ben Piper, a musician and songwriter whose journey spans the acapella scene at Michigan State University, the high seas as one-fourth of a barbershop quartet onboard the Celebrity Summit, the open road on The Glenn Miller Orchestra tour bus, the beaches and rehearsal spaces of Los Angeles, and the venues and classrooms of New York City.
Ben returned to Detroit in 2018 after sharpening his skills as an educator, working with schools and students in NYC for nearly a decade, and as a producer of live events with the artist collective ECHT, which he co-founded in 2015. He is passionate about his work with young Detroiters, developing the music program at Southeastern High School on the city’s east side, facilitating educational programming with Motown Museum, and leading workshops with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra & InsideOut Literary Arts.
